Discussion Guide for The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community
There are many ways to facilitate a deeper discussion of the ideas presented in The Great Turning. Our hope is that your discussions not only plumb the intellectual understanding of the ideas in The Great Turning, but also connect participants to their personal experiences of the larger influences of Empire, and create new stories based on the principles of Earth Community.
The discussion guide is designed for five, two-hour sessions, which are aligned with each of the five parts in the book. Each session includes: a synopsis of the major ideas within the chapters, whole group discussion questions to explore intellectually, and questions for small groups and dyads (groups of two) to explore more personally.
On his radio program, Conversations (aired on KMVR 89.5 in Nevada City, CA), Michael Stone talked with David, Sarah van Gelder (Executive Editor of YES! Magazine) and Dot Maver (President and CEO of Peace Partnership International) about the our current reality and the "peace paradigm."

Joanna designed her website - www.joannamacy.net - "to open doors to the new bodies of thought, time-tested spiritual practices, and pioneering group methods, that I find to be powerful inspirations to understanding and action."
In her May 2008 Letter, Joanna reflects on her Spring travels, her public dialogue with David Korten at Seattle Unity Church on April 25, and her "grateful sense of how the work is spreading," in large part due to the network of facilitators working with her on The Work That Reconnects.
From the UK, Chris Johnston publishes The Great Turning Times, a free quarterly email newsletter about the Great Turning and what we can do to get involved. It focuses particularly on both practical changes and also the deeper psychological and spiritual shifts that support the move to sustainable living. The Great Turning Times offers insights, news and and abundance of resources to support the shift towards a life sustaining society and brings together ecology, psychology, spirituality and world issues.
The Earth Charter (2000)
"We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace."
"Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations."
"It is the premise of The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community that we humans stand at a defining moment that presents us with an irrevocable choice. Our collective response will determine how our time is remembered for so long as the human species survives. In the days now at hand, we must each be clear that every individual and collective choice we make is a vote for the future we of this time will bequeath to the generations that follow. The Great Turning is not a prophecy; it is a possibility."
"We humans live by stories. The key to making a choice for Earth Community is recognizing that the foundation of Empire’s power does not lie in its instruments of physical violence. It lies in Empire’s ability to control the stories by which we define ourselves and our possibilities in order to perpetuate the myths on which the legitimacy of the dominator relations of Empire depend. To change the human future, we must change our defining stories."
"We are not representatives of an alternative fringe minority. We are the cutting edge of a national supermajority and it is appropriate for us to speak with a clear and confident voice."
"Future generations, if there is a livable world for them, will look back at the epochal transition we are making to a life-sustaining society. And they may well call this the time of the Great Turning."
"History is governed by those overarching movements that give shape and meaning to life by relating the human venture to the larger destinies of the universe. Creating such a movement might be called the Great Work of a people. . . . The historical mission of our times is to reinvent the human—at the species level, with critical reflection, within the community of life-systems."
"All societies are patterned on either a dominator model—in which human hierarchies are ultimately backed up by force or the threat of force—or a partnership model, with variations in between."
